What is an SSL certificate?

A plain-English guide for small business owners and developers on SSL, HTTPS and keeping your website secure.

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is a small digital file that encrypts the connection between your website and the people visiting it. When a site has a valid SSL certificate, its address starts with https:// and browsers show a padlock icon — a signal to visitors that the connection is secure.

How does an SSL certificate work?

SSL uses encryption to scramble data as it travels between a visitor's browser and your web server. Without it, information such as login details, contact form entries and payment data could be intercepted in plain text. With SSL, that data is unreadable to anyone who tries to capture it in transit.

When a browser connects to an SSL-secured site, the two perform a quick "handshake" to agree on encryption keys, then exchange data securely for the rest of the session. The certificate also verifies that the site is who it claims to be.

Why every business website in Nigeria needs SSL

  • Customer trust: Modern browsers mark sites without HTTPS as "Not secure", which scares visitors away.
  • Data protection: Encrypts logins, forms and payment details against interception.
  • Better SEO: Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal, so secure sites can rank higher.
  • Payments & compliance: Online payment gateways require HTTPS to process transactions.

Types of SSL certificates

  • Domain Validation (DV): Quick, automated validation — ideal for blogs and small business sites.
  • Organization Validation (OV): Verifies your business details for added trust.
  • Extended Validation (EV): The most rigorous checks, often used by banks and large e-commerce stores.
  • Wildcard: Secures a domain and all its subdomains with one certificate.
